Coca-Cola, Market, and Using Qualitative and Quantitative Data

In our unit on interpreting the charts and graphs, we discuss the concepts of qualitative and quantitative data. Whether we realize it our not, these data types are used often to determine how products are presented to us in terms of marketing.

Washington Post's Roberto Ferdman
In a recent article in the Washington Post, Roberto Ferdman discusses the work of a new book entitled Soda Politics. Soda Politics invites the reader into a historical view of marketing using the lens of Coca-Cola. We see how Coke made a name for itself by aligning with the war effort in World War II. The reader also sees how the Atlanta Coca-Cola factory presents the soft drink in terms of happiness and not refreshment, a key to its marketing success.

Coca-Cola Factory, Atlanta, Georgia

As we discuss quantitative and qualitative data, it is important to note that companies like Coke use this data to measure the effectiveness of their marketing campaigns. Based on your understanding of these two types of data, Discuss how companies like Coca-Cola might use (a) qualitative and (b) quantitative data to measure the effectiveness of marketing of their products. Be sure to use language presented in the SciVis curriculum to make your points.

Well for The company to use qualitative and quantitative data for the qualitative part , they use better ingredients so that the consumers would buy more of the products. with them using better ingredients , it's going to cost a lot more. On the quantitative side of things the price for the newer better tasting ingredient will go up so the company may raise the prices for Coca-Cola entirely.

On the quantitative side they use this to know if they need to use more of whatever they are using or whether to not use more the ingredients. They can determine their choice by seeing how much money they make over a certain amount of time. While on the qualitative they determine the customers opinions.

Coca-Cola might use qualitative because, they might want their product to look a certain part so people can buy it instead of the quantity of the product, even though with quantity you worry about the amount of the Coca-Cola they have. Another reason that they worry about the product in my opinion is that they know that Coca-Cola is popular so they make a less amount of the product.

Companies such as Coca-Cola use qualitative and quantitative data all of the time for use of marketing. They utilize quantitative data for marketing when a lot of numerical facts are important such as advertising a 12oz can having 39g of sugar in it to its consumers. Qualitative data helps the marketing team when design and logistics is involve, like how can the can be different , even the taste of Coca-Cola. Both strategies have an effect on marketing their product.

Coca-Cola might use qualitative data because they want people to by their product so they make it look a certain way and give it a different comfortable feel so people feel good about buying the product. Qualitative data also allows the people behind marketing decide if they should make it taste differently by maybe changing the ingredients by making the taste of the soda richer taste. Quantitative can be used based on the quantity of the size made in the factor each day because customers might prefer 16oz over 12oz. The amount of people buying the product also drives the price of Coca-Cola and how much they sell it to places like WalMart and Food Lion.

Used alongside trials, qualitative research can also shed light on the results of systematic reviews of effectiveness by looking for factors that can help explain heterogeneous results across trials.
